European Energy Handbook 2019-2020

BBA//Fjeldco contributed to the European Energy Handbook 2019-2020, published by Herbert Smith Freehills, by writing an overview of the legal andregulatory framework in Iceland and providing information on recentdevelopments in the Icelandic energy market.

The European Energy Handbook provides an in-depth survey of currentissues in the energy sector in 42 European jurisdiction.  This year´sedition covers issues such as the Energy Union, the adoption of the latestpackage of EU energy legislation, and the 'Clean Energy for All Europeans'bundle of directives and regulations updating the EU's energy policy frameworkto facilitate the decarbonisation of the sector and the transition towardscleaner energy.

Recent developments in the Icelandic energy market include the ClimateStrategy, announced by the Icelandic Government in September of 2018, to helpIceland meet its Paris Agreement targets for 2030 and reach the Government´sambitious aim to make Iceland carbon neutral before 2040. Furthermore, Icelandactively participated to the creation of the Global Geothermal Alliance whichaspires to achieve a 500% increase in global installed capacity for geothermal  power generation and a 200% increasein geothermal heating by 2030.
